Due to circumstances beyond our control, Cheder has been temporarily suspended but you can see some past Cheder events.

 Cheder Activities

The Cheder has been involved in several very enjoyable and successful functions.

 The Pre Pesach Cheder

There was a pre Pesach Cheder held on Sunday 15th March 2009. This involved a mock Seder and a report was written by Tarryn Fay.

THE PESACH CHEDER AT NADINE’S

On Sunday 15th of March I went to a fantastic Cheder for Pesach at Nadine Mitchell’s house.  It was a brilliant experience and I would love to go to another event like this one.

When we got there we helped getting things ready, then went out the back garden to play.

We got called in to start the Seder, we got given special booklets which made it more simple for us to understand, compared to the full version of the Hagada.

Nadine prepared them especially for us.  It had the story of Pesach and songs written in English and Hebrew.

It was really interesting and everyone got to say a little passage in Hebrew.

We sang a few songs, drank the special wine and leaned to the left as we said our prayers.

The girls got to light the candles and we learnt to say the prayers and blessing of the different things on the Pesach plate.

We sat down to eat the meal which was very nice, the soup was delicious.

I enjoyed the experience very much and now I’m ready for the real thing on Pesach night.

From Nadine:

A very big thank you to all participants, and their parents for their help with the Cheders.  A very special thank you to Phia-Neve whose help meant a great deal to me.

On Sunday February 22nd there was a fun Purim Cheder where the children learnt about Purim, made puppets and Hamatashan, ate some and took some home for their families - yum-yum.

At the pre-Chanuka cheder the children experienced:

painting chanukiot on  tiles, creative pictures using beads, and a baking experience (under adult supervision).

For Succot, the children made and hung decorations for a succah and later had a meal in the succah.

Any age able to participate, can attend. Most activities, take place in the vestry at Synagogue Chambers, Catherine Street, Plymouth, PL1 2AD.

Oneg Shabbat.

This is a very special plea to all parents.

We would like to arrange a regular special Children's Service on the last Shabbat of each month. If this coincides with a festival then that can be incorporated into the service.

You can drop your child/children off at Shul 11am and collect them 12.30pm. It would be perfect if you could also stay now and again.

Please, please allow your children and grandchildren to join in with the cheder fun as it increases knowledge of their Jewish heritage.

We can also hold special classes for your child to be coached for their Bar Mitvah or Bat Chayil. Again for further information, first contact: Nadine Mitchell, 01752 721426 - Chair Cheder Activities, 2nd contact: Anna Kelly Honorary Secretary on: land line: 01822 614203 or mobile: 07818 094894
